Abstract: As recently as sixty years ago grist, feed, and flour mills were essential and commonplace parts of the economic and social fabric of rural Southern Appalachian counties like Floyd County, VA. This illustrated presentation provides an overview of the history and technology of grain milling in our area, and features notable or typical mills and the men and women who built, ran, and finally abandoned these icons of semi-self-sufficient agrarian life.
